Devils Bet Big on Sunny Mehta to Lead Franchise Into New Era

The New Jersey Devils have named Sunny Mehta as the franchise’s new general manager, ushering in a new era focused on analytics, adaptability, and sustained contention.

The hire, officially announced April 16, comes after the dismissal of longtime GM Tom Fitzgerald following a disappointing 2025–26 campaign. Mehta returns to the organization after previously helping build one of the NHL’s first full-scale analytics departments and most recently serving as assistant GM with the Florida Panthers, where he contributed to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

A New Jersey native and lifelong Devils fan, Mehta steps into the role with both familiarity and a modern approach to team building. His background, which includes experience as a professional poker player and data scientist, has shaped a reputation for calculated, forward-thinking decision-making.

At his introductory press conference, Mehta made clear his intentions for the franchise, emphasizing both patience and assertiveness in guiding the team forward.

“We’re going to be tight and aggressive in our decision-making,” Mehta said.

Rather than signaling a rebuild, Mehta views the Devils as a team capable of competing now while continuing to develop long-term. He stressed the importance of integrating scouting, analytics, and player development into a cohesive strategy, while taking time to evaluate the current roster and coaching staff before making major changes.

Mehta inherits a talented core that includes captain Nico Hischier and star forward Jack Hughes, but also a roster that underperformed expectations this past season. His immediate priorities will include assessing personnel decisions, clarifying the team’s direction, and restoring consistency.

For the Devils, the appointment signals a shift toward a more progressive front office, one that blends data-driven insight with calculated risk, led by a GM returning home with both experience and vision.
