The Edmonton Oilers are facing growing scrutiny as reports indicate the organization is seriously exploring the possibility of hiring Mike Babcock as its next head coach. The potential move comes after the club was blocked from interviewing Bruce Cassidy and failed to secure several other high-profile coaching candidates, leaving management searching for alternative options behind the bench.
According to multiple reports, the Oilers are currently consulting with the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA) to determine whether there would be any formal objections to Babcock's return to coaching. The organization is reportedly in a holding pattern while awaiting feedback from both the union and league officials before making any final decisions.
The possibility of Babcock joining Edmonton has immediately reignited debate throughout the hockey world, with critics pointing to a series of controversies that have followed the veteran coach in recent years.
Shadow of the Columbus Departure
The most significant concern stems from Babcock's brief and turbulent tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In September 2023, Babcock resigned before coaching a single regular-season game after an NHLPA investigation examined allegations that he had crossed professional boundaries with players.
Several players reported feeling uncomfortable after being asked to show personal photographs stored on their cell phones during meetings with the coach. However, the Oilers must weigh those credentials against the considerable public relations challenges that would accompany his hiring. Any decision to bring Babcock back into the NHL spotlight would almost certainly invite renewed examination of his past conduct and leadership methods.
