How Rasmus Dahlin Became the Foundation of the Buffalo Sabres

When the Buffalo Sabres selected Rasmus Dahlin with the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, the expectation wasn't simply that he would become a productive defenseman. He was expected to become the cornerstone of the franchise.
For a while, that projection felt uncertain.
Like many young defensemen, Dahlin experienced growing pains early in his career. His 23-point season in 2020-21, paired with a minus-36 rating, led many around the league to question whether he would ever develop into the elite two-way defenseman Buffalo envisioned.
Six years later, those questions have disappeared.
Dahlin is coming off the best season of his career, recording 19 goals and 55 assists for 74 points in 77 games while helping lead the Sabres to their first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance since 2011. He also earned recognition as a finalist for both the Norris Trophy and the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, cementing himself among the NHL's elite defensemen.
More importantly, he has become the player Buffalo can build around.
That transformation has also made his eight-year, $88 million contract one of the NHL's best long-term investments. With six seasons remaining at an $11 million annual cap hit, Dahlin is providing Buffalo with elite production at a price that compares favorably to what many of the league's top defensemen are expected to earn on future contracts.
What separates Dahlin now isn't just the offense. Plenty of defensemen can produce points. His ability to control play in all three zones, quarterback the power play, and handle difficult defensive assignments has made him one of the league's most complete blueliners.
Whether he's breaking up rushes with his skating, leading the breakout with crisp outlet passes, or creating offense from the blue line, Dahlin impacts every facet of the game. Few defensemen possess the combination of poise, vision, and offensive instincts that he brings to Buffalo's lineup.
His growth has coincided with Buffalo finally taking a step forward as a team.
The Sabres are no longer rebuilding. Expectations have shifted toward remaining a playoff contender, and Dahlin sits at the center of everything they hope to accomplish.
That responsibility may become even greater next season.
Following Bowen Byram's departure, Buffalo lost an important puck-moving defenseman who logged significant minutes in transition and offensive situations. While Owen Power, Mattias Samuelsson, and newcomer Olen Zellweger provide depth, replacing Byram's impact won't fall on one player.
Instead, it will likely require Dahlin to shoulder even more responsibility.
Whether that means heavier minutes at even strength, additional special teams work, or being leaned on in late-game situations, Buffalo's coaching staff will almost certainly ask more of their captain.
Fortunately, Dahlin has shown he's more than capable of handling it.
One of the biggest signs of his maturity has been his consistency. Rather than relying solely on highlight-reel offensive plays, he's become the steady presence every successful team needs from its No. 1 defenseman.
He's the player Buffalo trusts against top competition, the one who drives offense from the blue line, and the leader his teammates look to when momentum swings.
That evolution is exactly why the Sabres are positioned where they are today.
For years, Buffalo searched for an identity while cycling through coaches, prospects, and rebuilding plans. Now, that identity starts with Dahlin.
If the Sabres hope to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference, they'll need another elite season from their captain. Based on the trajectory of his career, there's every reason to believe he'll deliver.
After years of waiting, Rasmus Dahlin has become far more than a former first-overall pick. He's become the foundation Buffalo envisioned from the moment they called his name in 2018.
