Unparalleled speed, smooth stick handling, and remarkable hockey IQ—Conner McDavid’s got it all. Winning the best NHL player ESPY Award in 2024, this twenty-eight-year-old Canadian star consistently performs at the highest level. Yet, with his upcoming contract decision looming, Oiler fans are left wondering what his choice will be and how it will impact the future of the team.
McDavid is currently entering the final season of his eight-year, US$100-million contract he signed in 2017.
“I said at the end of June I had every intention just to take my time with it, and I still feel the same way,” is what McDavid commented on the topic when asked about his contract while attending a Hockey Canada Olympic and Paralympic orientation camp over the summer.
McDavid said in an interview, "All options are on the table," including "short term," "long term," and "no term."
Oilers fans are now stirring with speculation about McDavid’s potential departure from Edmonton. Since being named captain in 2016—the youngest in NHL history at the time—he has been the cornerstone of the franchise. Having witnessed his growth and development firsthand, supporters find it difficult to imagine the team without him. As an unrestricted free agent, McDavid would posses the freedom to negotiate with any NHL team, leaving the Oilers without any claim on him.
The Oilers have battled their way to the Stanley Cup Final in consecutive seasons, demonstrating remarkable resilience and skill. Following the 2025 defeat to the Florida Panthers, McDavid’s hunger for victory has only intensified. In a recent interview, he emphasized the importance of preparation and unity, expressing his desire for the team to be “as focused and dialed in and ready to roll come Day 1 as possible.” He made it clear that his players don’t “need any distractions” as they set their sights on the cup this upcoming season.
What will the future be for the Oiler’s captain?
