NHL EDGE Overview
NHL EDGE is an advanced technology system that tracks numerous statistics from gameplay from a sensor placed in players jerseys. The technology helps form data about players speed, puck movement, shot speed, distances skated, and zoning details. Numbers are updated daily, so fans will never miss an opportunity to dive into a post-game summary of all the striking statistics from the night before.
Max Skating Speed: 24.61 MPH - Connor McDavid (F, Edmonton Oilers)
Connor McDavid’s stellar home opener performance on Oct 8, against the Calgary Flames, still holds top spot for skater speed. McDavid’s speed is no surprise, though the 3-time MVP winner has consistently bursted at speeds above 22MPH.
This season, McDavid is in the 99th percentile in the NHL for max skater speed, number of bursts above 22 MPH, number of 20-22 MPH bursts, and number of 18-20 MPH bursts. These statistics add to McDavid’s legacy of being arguably one of the most skilled NHL players in history.
Aside from speed, McDavid also leads the league in total miles skated, with 205.08, about 20 miles ahead of second-place Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov. Since NHL EDGE tracking began in 2021-22, the only player that has recorded a faster speed is Miles Wood last season, at 24.82 MPH.
Hardest shot on net: 103.03 MPH - Morgan Geekie (F, Boston Bruins)
Morgan Geekie, Bruins center, clapped the hardest shot of the 2025-2026 season so far, against their division rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs, on November 11. Geekie has proved himself to be an important piece to the Boston Bruins lineup, and a notable player in the NHL with his offensive abilities and strong shot.
To show for his powerful shot, Geekie has tallied 26 goals this season in 49 games, on track to break his previous record of 33 goals in 77 games last season. Closely behind Geekie for hardest shot ranks the New York Islanders defenseman, Ryan Pulock, with a 103.01 MPH, against the Seattle Kraken on November 23.
Offensive Zone Time Percentage: 50.1% - Brady Tkachuk (F, Ottawa Senators)
Offensive zone time percentage is another notable statistic, demonstrating which players tend to dominate in the offensive zone. This season, Brady Tkachuk takes first place, with just over 50% of his playing minutes spent attacking in the offensive zone. The average offensive zone time in the league for forwards is just over 42%.
On the defensive side, Tkachuk also leads the league in the lowest percentage of time spent in the defensive zone, at 33.3%. These percentages demonstrate the left wingers high value in the league, being a player that keeps his team on the right side of puck. Narrowly behind Tkachuk is Carolina Hurricane forward Andrei Svechnikov, with 49.2% offensive zone time lapsed. Svechnikov holds second place for lowest percentage of time in the defensive zone as well with 33%.
