Schaefer’s Breakout Rookie Season Fuels Islanders in 4-3 OT Win

MONTREAL — The New York Islanders continued their push in the 2025-26 season with a 4-3 overtime victory against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, and once again rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer played a defining role.
New York trailed early but rallied to take control. Schaefer, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, sparked the comeback in the second period by scoring two goals in a 55-second span to tie the game 2-2. Schaefer’s tally gave him 18 goals during the season, breaking the Islanders’ rookie defenseman record and moving past the NHL mark for goals by an 18-year-old blueliner.
Islanders captain Anders Lee chipped in with a goal late in the third to draw New York even after Montreal had taken a 3-2 lead, setting up the dramatic finish. Jean-Gabriel Pageau then ended it 1:46 into overtime, converting off a Simon Holmstrom play to earn the extra-point win at the Bell Centre.
Ilya Sorokin made 21 saves for the Islanders, who improved to 33-21-5 with the victory. Meanwhile, Montreal’s Noah Dobson scored twice against his former team and Cole Caufield added a third-period goal for the Canadiens, who dropped to 32-17-9 despite the strong showing.
Head coach Patrick Roy, Islanders’ staff and the team have leaned on Schaefer’s poise and offensive instincts all season, and once again it paid dividends in Montreal.
“There’s no right word to describe him,” Pageau said. “We’re lucky to have the chance to experience [his rookie season] by his side and watch his game grow. He’s so mature for 18 years old. Not only goals, but defensive plays in the right spot, good first passes. Those are the details that make him so special. We’re lucky to have him.”
Schaefer’s influence extends beyond a single night. Throughout his rookie campaign, he has been a dynamic presence at both ends of the ice, showing confidence with the puck and composure in key defensive moments.
As the Islanders continue their climb in the standings, Schaefer’s blend of offensive skill and defensive awareness has made him not only a rookie to watch, but a cornerstone for the franchise’s future.
