Three PWHL Players Ready for Bigger Roles in 2026-27

With expansion reshaping the PWHL this offseason, teams across the league have been forced to adjust their rosters. As organizations replace key departures, the 2026-27 season presents an opportunity for several emerging players to make a bigger impact than ever before. Whether it's a fresh start with a new team or increased responsibility on a familiar roster, these three players are well-positioned to take the next step this season.
New Beginnings
After two solid seasons with the Ottawa Charge, defender Stephanie Markowski is heading to Detroit after being left unprotected in the expansion draft. Markowski signed a two-year Standard Player Agreement with PWHL Detroit on June 21, 2026.
During her time with Ottawa, the left-shot defender appeared in 58 regular-season games, recording one goal and four assists across two seasons. She also played in all eight of the Charge's playoff games during their two postseason runs but did not register a point.
The move to Detroit could provide the fresh start Markowski needs as she joins fellow left-shot defenders Mellissa Channell-Watkins and Mia Biotti. Her steady play over the past two seasons, combined with her offensive upside, makes her a versatile and reliable addition to an expansion roster.
Heading Home
Minnesota Frost forward Abby Hustler is returning to her native Canada after signing with PWHL Hamilton, one of four expansion teams joining the league for the 2026-27 season. It will be her first opportunity to play professionally in Canada after spending four years at St. Lawrence University before being drafted by Minnesota for the 2025-26 season.
Hustler appeared in all 30 regular-season games for the Frost, recording four goals and nine assists. She also played in every first-round playoff game against Montreal, picking up an assist in the second period of Game 5 before Minnesota was eliminated. She finished the season with 14 points across the regular season and playoffs.
After leading Minnesota's rookies in goals last season, Hustler will look to bring that same offensive spark to Hamilton.
Larger Opportunity
With the departure of right winger Jamie Lee Rattray, the Boston Fleet may look to Shay Maloney to take on a larger offensive role this season.
Maloney made an immediate impact during her rookie campaign, recording three goals and six assists while leading all PWHL rookies with 39 hits. In her sophomore season, she matched her regular-season goal total with three but finished with fewer assists. She also scored in Boston's Game 4 playoff loss to the Ottawa Charge, bringing her season total to four goals across the regular season and playoffs.
With increased responsibility and her relentless physical style of play, Maloney has the potential to become an even bigger offensive contributor for the Fleet.
