Crosby vs. Ovechkin: Meeting No. 100
Written By Josie Dinonsie
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin faced off for the 100th time on Sunday afternoon in the nation’s capital. A 3–0 win by the Washington Capitals sealed a historic night for Ovechkin, who could be playing in his final NHL season.
The pair, who have competed against each other for 21 seasons, have been defining players for the league. Over the past two decades, Crosby and Ovechkin have been the faces of the National Hockey League. Both former first-round picks have built historic careers, combining for four Stanley Cups and serving as captains of their respective teams for nearly two decades.
While both players are remarkable stars, their contrasting playing styles have shaped their rivalry. Crosby’s precise playmaking and vision complement Ovechkin’s physicality and powerful shot, making them influential figures for fans since 2005.
Entering the league following the 2004–05 lockout, Crosby and Ovechkin helped usher in a new era for the NHL, one defined by leadership, elite skill, and fierce competitiveness.
Even in their early years, the young stars brought an unprecedented level of intensity to the playoffs. The 2009 conference finals marked a defining moment in their rivalry, highlighted by both players recording hat tricks in Game 2. It was a true star-versus-star showdown that has continued through the 2025–26 season.
During their first decade as competitors, Crosby’s success with the Pittsburgh Penguins often overshadowed Ovechkin’s with the Capitals. In 2009, Crosby captured his first Stanley Cup after defeating Ovechkin in the Eastern Conference Final. He went on to achieve further success, leading Pittsburgh to championships in 2016 and 2017.
For a time, Crosby was viewed as the ultimate winner, while Ovechkin struggled to find playoff success. That narrative shifted in 2018, when the long-building tension between the two rivals reached a turning point.
For the first time in franchise history, the Capitals won the Stanley Cup, becoming the 2018 champions. With that victory, Ovechkin cemented his status as a champion, and the rivalry deepened as both players reached the pinnacle of the sport.
Ovechkin’s legacy continued to grow beyond that triumph. In 2025, he became the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.
While the statistics and accolades of both players are extraordinary, their careers represent far more than numbers. For over two decades, Crosby and Ovechkin have helped carry the league into a new generation, elevating the game with speed, skill, leadership, and the enduring importance of a classic rivalry.
Their shared journey is truly unique, entering the league at the same time, evolving together, and remaining elite as their rivalry intensified with every meeting.
The 100th matchup between the two is more than just a milestone; it marks one of the greatest eras in NHL history. Although this meeting may be the last time Crosby and Ovechkin face off, their legacy will endure, and their impact on the game will never fade.
