Ovechkin Faces Uncertain Future as Legendary Career Nears Crossroads

Written By Gina Anton

For the first time in over two decades, Alex Ovechkin isn’t sure what comes next.

After completing his 21st NHL season, the Washington Capitals captain is openly undecided about whether he will return for another year. At 40 years old, and with his contract expiring this summer, Ovechkin has made it clear that no final decision has been made.

“I hope it’s not my last game,” Ovechkin said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. So, we’ll see.”

That uncertainty marks a rare moment in the career of one of hockey’s most iconic players.

A Career Unlike Any Other

Ovechkin’s résumé places him firmly among the greatest players in NHL history and, arguably, the greatest goal scorer the sport has ever seen.

He enters the offseason with 929 career goals and 1,687 points, having broken Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record in 2025.

Among his many accomplishments:

  • 1 Stanley Cup championship (2018)

  • 3 Hart Trophies (league MVP)

  • 9 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies (most in NHL history)

  • 12 NHL All-Star selections

Even late in his career, Ovechkin continues to produce. He scored 32 goals this season, leading the Capitals once again.

Beyond the numbers, his impact on the game is unmatched; his signature one-timer, physical play, and longevity have defined an era of hockey.

Emotional Final Game Atmosphere

If this was indeed his last game in Washington, it had the feel of a farewell.

Fans packed the arena and chanted, “One more year!” creating a playoff-like atmosphere despite the Capitals missing the postseason.

Ovechkin, joined by his family after the game, soaked in the moment, acknowledging the crowd but stopping short of committing to a return.

“I’m pretty sure it’s not my last game,” Ovechkin said. “I hope it’s not my last game against Columbus. I have to make a decision to see where we’re at: the team, family.”

The night felt less like an ending and more like a pause, with everyone, from teammates to fans, waiting on his decision.

Contract and What Comes Next

Ovechkin just completed the final season of a five-year, $47.5 million contract he signed in 2021.

That deal, which carried a $9.5 million annual cap hit, now leaves him as an unrestricted free agent for the first time in years.

He has repeatedly said he would wait until after the season to decide his future. He plans to evaluate his health, the feelings of his family members, and his team. For now, there is no extension in place and no timeline for a decision.

Legacy Already Secured

Whether Ovechkin returns or not, his place in hockey history is already cemented.

From rewriting the record books to delivering Washington its first Stanley Cup, he has spent his entire NHL career with one franchise and transformed it into a perennial contender.

Now, the only question left is whether fans have seen his final game or if one of the greatest careers the sport has ever witnessed still has one more chapter.
