Pastrnak’s OT Heroics Keep Bruins Alive in Game 5 Thriller

BUFFALO — With their season hanging in the balance, the Boston Bruins delivered a composed, resilient effort Tuesday night, defeating the Buffalo Sabres 2–1 in overtime in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series.

The victory trims Buffalo’s series lead to 3–2 and sends the matchup back to Boston for a pivotal Game 6.

In a game defined by structure and patience, both teams leaned heavily on their defensive systems early, limiting high-danger opportunities and forcing play to the perimeter. The Sabres broke through first on the power play, when Rasmus Dahlin blasted a shot through traffic to give Buffalo a 1–0 lead and energize the home crowd.

Boston responded with urgency as the game progressed and found its equalizer later in regulation. Elias Lindholm capitalized on a sustained offensive-zone shift, finishing a clean passing sequence to tie the game at 1–1 and shift momentum toward the visitors.

From there, the contest evolved into a goaltending showcase. Jeremy Swayman stood tall for Boston, turning aside 25 shots and delivering several critical saves in high-pressure moments late in regulation. Across the ice, Alex Lyon was equally steady, frustrating Bruins shooters and preserving the deadlock to force overtime.

But in the extra frame, Boston’s star delivered.

At 9:14 of overtime, David Pastrnak broke free on a breakaway after receiving the puck from Hampus Lindholm and snapped it past Lyon, sealing the 2–1 victory and extending the Bruins’ season.

The goal silenced the Buffalo crowd and injected new life into a Boston team that had been on the brink of elimination.

“We’re neighbors and we always call it the neighbor connection,” Pastrnak said of Lindholm. “No, it's just great. Great eyes. Seems like anytime he has the puck and I have an opening, I have the confidence that he's going to find me. We have the chemistry so it's fun, and happy that we connected today.”

Despite the loss, the Sabres remain in control of the series and will have another opportunity to close it out. Still, Game 5 may linger as a missed chance, as Buffalo was unable to capitalize on key opportunities that could have ended the matchup on home ice.

Now, the pressure shifts back to Boston, where the Bruins will look to build on their momentum and force a decisive Game 6.
