Cutter Gauthier Turns Down $52 Million: What Comes Next for the Ducks?

Cutter Gauthier is coming off a breakout season, and he appears ready to bet on himself.
The restricted free agent has reportedly rejected a four-year, $52 million contract offer from the Anaheim Ducks, according to NHL Network’s Paul Shaheen. The proposed deal would have carried a $13 million annual average value.
Gauthier’s decision does not necessarily signal dissatisfaction with Anaheim. Instead, it highlights how much his value has changed after one of the best seasons of his young career.
In 2025-26, Gauthier established himself as one of Anaheim’s most important offensive players. The 22-year-old recorded 41 goals and 69 points in 76 games, leading the Ducks in both categories. His 41 goals also made him just the fourth player in franchise history to reach the 40-goal mark in a season.
That breakout has changed the conversation surrounding his future.
Gauthier Has Changed the Conversation
Before last season, Gauthier was already viewed as an important part of Anaheim’s young core. After scoring 20 goals and 44 points in his first full NHL season, though, there were still questions about how quickly he could develop into a consistent top offensive threat.
He answered them.
Gauthier became a 40-goal scorer and Anaheim’s leading scorer, putting himself in a much stronger position as he negotiates his first major NHL contract. With that breakout comes added pressure, as the expectations surrounding him, and the price tag that could come with them, continue to rise.
That gives Gauthier a compelling reason to bet on his future. Another strong season could strengthen his negotiating position even further, particularly if he proves that his 41-goal campaign was the beginning of a new level rather than a one-season jump.
For Anaheim, that creates a difficult decision.
A Complicated Situation for Anaheim
The Ducks have already committed significant money to their young core, and their current salary-cap situation makes the Gauthier negotiations even more complicated.
Anaheim has just over $9 million in projected cap space, according to PuckPedia. That means the Ducks would need to make additional moves to fit a $13 million annual salary into their current structure.
The issue, then, is bigger than simply getting Gauthier under contract.
Anaheim has to determine how much of its future salary structure should be devoted to a player who has just produced his first 40-goal season. At the same time, the Ducks need enough flexibility to build a deep roster around their young stars.
That could put pressure on general manager Pat Verbeek to make difficult decisions elsewhere. The longer the situation remains unresolved, the more complicated roster planning becomes heading into the 2026-27 season.
What It Means for Ducks Fans
For Anaheim fans, there is plenty of reason to be excited despite the contract uncertainty.
Gauthier’s breakout means the Ducks have another young forward who has demonstrated legitimate top-end scoring ability. Alongside the rest of Anaheim’s emerging core, he could become an important piece of the franchise’s next competitive window.
But his contract could also become one of the first major tests of that rebuild.
If Anaheim reaches an agreement with Gauthier, the Ducks will have secured one of their most promising young players for the long term. The challenge will then be maintaining enough depth around him to turn that young talent into a legitimate contender.
Gauthier has earned the opportunity to bet on his future after his breakout year.
Now, the Ducks have to decide how much that future is worth.
